You have got to check out this site. The artist takes children’s drawings and turns them into art. Here is how he describes it: “The process is simple. I project a child’s drawing with an opaque projector, faithfully tracing each line. Applying a combination of logic and instinct, I then paint the image as realistically as I can. My medium is mixed—primarily acrylic, airbrush, and colored pencil.” Sample below (and man is it freaky). Check out the rest of the gallery here.
I’m posting my story, “Last Year’s Eggnog,” on the site for free! This story comes from the anthology, Christmas Lites. I am hoping that you will read my story, love it, and decide to buy the anthology so you can read the even better stories that are contained therein. Remember, every dime goes to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Give yourself a gift and help others too. Read my story here and buy the anthology here.
Following up on the death of music post from earlier, I’ve decided to add a new feature to the site–Free Music Friday. Today’s contribution comes from Matt the Electrician. This is definitely a song you aren’t going to hear on the radio. I’m pretty sure this video was recorded in somebody’s house. Anyway, enjoy!
Once again, JournalStone is having a contest for best work of dark fiction. The winner receives a publishing contract and a $2,000 advance. Yours truly will be passing the crown this year to another deserving unpublished author. Since I can’t have just anybody winning, I will also be a judge in this year’s competition! So if you’ve got the next big thing in horror sitting on your computer, submissions are accepted through April 1, 2012. Change your life.
Honestly, I have no idea how to describe this, but once you start watching you can’t turn away. I mean, check out Brad Pitt! Get that man in a horror movie, stat! Here it is. Touch of Evil: Cinematic Villainy
It’s been long predicted and oft lamented, but you can’t read this article and not come away with the thought that popular music is in trouble. I’ve decided to occasionally feature high quality songs–sometimes mainstream, sometimes independent–on the site. I mean, why not, right? Anyway, you may like some of it, all of it, or none of it, but at least you can’t say I didn’t try. Up this week, the haunting tune “Video Games” by Lana Del Ray. The video is pure Los Angeles in all its gritty glory. Also, she has very large lips.
My review of Christmas Lites is now available here. Yes, one of the stories contained therein is mine. And yes, my story is woefully inadequate compared to some of the others. But whatever. Better product for the consumer I guess. I guess . . .
My review of American Psycho is now up on the Book Reviews page and is available here. While I think the novel is objectively great, I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as I thought I would, and it lost a star because of it. Still, well worth the read . . . if you can stomach it.
I’ve come to terms with that fact that I am not internet funny. I mean, I think I am pretty humorous in person. It’s a dry humor that stupid people don’t always get, but I am usually able to generate some chuckles, a few guffaws, and the occasional belly laugh. But internet funny? Can’t do it. I can write horror, but comedy is just not my bag. And that’s too bad. People like funny. If I was funny, more people would read my blog. Fortunately, I believe I have stumbled upon a solution — steal from other people! And so I give to you the Bloggess, one of the funniest women on the internet. It’s gonna be tough to top this one . . .
Hey guys. Book 2 (or Book 4, depending on how well you know me), is now firmly in the “it writes itself” stage of production. I find the first 35-40 thousand words are the hardest, but once you have the characters established and the plot set, you can really dive in. It’s amazing how much the personalities of your characters and the dynamics of the plot start to drive everything. I think there is even a decent chance I will finish by my deadline . . .
Yesterday was a record day for The Site That Should Not Be. Apparently I need to stop talking about horror so much and find some more funny articles to post. 🙂
The Horror Writers Association has compiled a good list of horror novels and short stories published in the last year. They update it regularly as new recommendations for their annual Bram Stoker Award are submitted by the members. Check it out Here.
