Free Music Friday–Lera Lynn covering Wolf Like Me

Hey guys.  I know I’ve been neglecting you.  This new job allows little time for anything other than working.  Then when I get home I have to do things like get my next book ready to go.  Thus, the website suffers.  Consider this a peace offering.  Here is Lera Lynn covering TV on the Radio’s Wolf Like Me.  And it is FANTASTIC.

My First Foreign Language Review

It’s a matter of great personal shame that I don’t speak any language other than English.  I learned Spanish once, but it only took a year for that to disappear.  I know some Latin, lot of good that does me.  I tried to learn French once, but at that I failed miserably.  And I regret that now more than ever, as I received my first foreign language review today, and it’s in French.  The google translation is spotty at best, but here it is in all its glory.  It ends with a 10/10, which I take to be a good sign.

Best Doritos Super Bowl Commercial You Will Never See

What is it with ad departments screwing up the Super Bowl this year?  They must have gotten their advice from the Patriots receiving corps.   Come on people!  First the ice hockey and now this.  Hat tip to http://www.awesome-robo.com for pointing this one out.

Free Florida Primary Music–Covers of Adele’s Rolling in the Deep

No one can sing like the incomparable Adele, but that doesn’t stop people from trying.  Below are two covers of “Rolling in the Deep.”  The first is a FANTASTIC rendition by some of our deployed soldiers deployed.  And wow can they sing.  The second is a compilation of covers from around the world.  Some good, some . . . not.  Enjoy!  Oh, what does this have to do with the primary?  Nothing, actually.

Ah Boston, Love of my Soul

I am coming to you LIVE from the capital of Massachusetts, home of the American Revolution, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Tom Brady.  I’ve started my new job, but I am in that awkward place where nobody knows if I am incompetent or not.  Thus, I have time to talk to all of you!

Boston is a city of eternal conundrums for me.  It is easily my favorite town in America.  I love the weather, the feel of the city, the environs of New England, the sports teams, the food.  It’s just all fantastic.  But man is it far away from Alabama.  Alabama’s home.  It’s where the heart is, as it were, and I want to return to Alabama one day and put down roots.  But while I love Boston concretely, my love for Alabama is more abstract.  I’ve yet to find a place in Alabama that fit me.  Alas, if only Boston were in the South.

Oh well.  My time in this great city is limited by the nature of my job, so I suppose I will just enjoy it before I leave it forever.  We are starcrossed lovers, doomed to be apart.  To borrow a line from Shakespeare, “Never was a story of more woe, than that of Brettiet and his Bostono.”

Free Music Friday (OK, It’s Really Saturday)

Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People is probably the most overrated song of the last year.  But the Miracles of Modern Science cover of Pumped Up Kicks?  Now that’s something Pitchfork can get behind!  Actually, they’d probably hate it, just like they hate everything that is good and decent.  But I like it, and here it is.  Enjoy!

My Five Star Review of High Moor by Graeme Reynolds

Great book.  Check out the review here.  I need to find some books to review that I don’t like so people don’t think I am a softy.  Problem is, if I don’t like a book, I usually don’t finish it.

Smashy Smash Words

I threw “The Chamber” up on Smashwords for free and in two days a hundred people have already downloaded it.  I’m beginning to think that free short stories might be a great way to advertise the novel.  Check it out if you are interested.

Smashwords Update

So in the first day, 60 people downloaded my free short story I posted on Smashwords.  I actually think that’s pretty good (don’t know what most people achieve.)  Hopefully they will like it and go buy my book.  Somebody even bought a copy of the short story I have up for 99 cents.  Personally I think it’s crazy to buy a short story for 99 cents, but don’t tell anybody.  Also, I have published a short story through Kindle Direct Publishing, “The Substance of Shadow.”  It was previously available on this site, but now it is over on Kindle.  It’s free for Prime members.

Made the Second Round of the 2012 International Thriller Awards

Hey guys.  Wanted to share some good news.  That Which Should Not Be has made the second round of the International Thriller Awards for Best First Novel.  Now, I have no idea how many rounds there are (hopefully not 16 or something), but I wanted to share the good news anyway.  I will keep you informed.  Also, voting has started on the Preliminary Ballot for the Bram Stoker Awards.  Cross your fingers.  If I win one of these things, I’m gonna make JournalStone write me a Wikipedia article.  Always wanted one of those . . .
