2012 Horror Reading Challenge

I don’t know what it is about this particular challenge that intrigued me (the evil clown, perhaps?), but I decided to join up.  Wanted to share the info with all of you as well.

January 1, 2012

New Years is always an amazing time to me.  The possibilities, the opportunities.  Who knows where we will be at the end of the year (assuming the Mayans were wrong)?  My last year is the perfect example of that.

2011 was something else.  This time last year, I was an unpublished author with a manuscript that I thought was pretty good.  Then I won JournalStone’s novel contest, and all of the sudden, That Which Should Not Be was published.  Then it was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award and, as of this writing, That Which Should Not Be has twenty-one Five Star reviews on Amazon (and forty-eight on Goodreads).

I won the Absent Willow Review’s 2011 Short Story Contest.  My short stories have been included in two anthologies, Christmas Lites and 90 Minutes to Live.  And now I am wrapping up my second novel to be published by JournalStone this summer.  Like I said, the future is bright.  2012 should be an incredible year.

Get All of Lovecraft’s Stories for $0.99

Found this on Amazon earlier tonight.  Someone went to the trouble of digitizing all of Lovecraft’s stories and putting them up on the Kindle store for .99  Can’t imagine why any fan of the Mythos wouldn’t jump on this one.  Here’s the link.

That Which Should Not Be Gets Its 1000th Add on Goodreads

One thousand people have now added That Which Should Not Be to their shelves on Goodreads.com.  This seemed like as fine a time as any to thank all of you out there who have given the book a chance.  There is nothing we have that is more precious than time.  That you have seen fit to spend some of that valuable commodity on a novel I wrote is truly a great honor.

Free Music on this Christmas Eve!

Here is a video of my favorite rendition of my favorite Christmas carol, “We Three Kings.” This comes from the old Claymation Christmas. Don’t know if they still show that or not . . .

JournalStone’s 2012 Novel Contest is Live!

Once again, JournalStone is having a contest for best work of dark fiction.  The winner receives a publishing contract and a $2,000 advance.  Yours truly will be passing the crown this year to another deserving unpublished author.  Since I can’t have just anybody winning, I will also be a judge in this year’s competition!  So if you’ve got the next big thing in horror sitting on your computer, submissions are accepted through April 1, 2012.  Change your life.

The Funniest Blog Post in the History of Blog Posts

I’ve come to terms with that fact that I am not internet funny.  I mean, I think I am pretty humorous in person.  It’s a dry humor that stupid people don’t always get, but I am usually able to generate some chuckles, a few guffaws, and the occasional belly laugh.  But internet funny?  Can’t do it.  I can write horror, but comedy is just not my bag.  And that’s too bad.  People like funny.  If I was funny, more people would read my blog.  Fortunately, I believe I have stumbled upon a solution — steal from other people!  And so I give to you the Bloggess, one of the funniest women on the internet.  It’s gonna be tough to top this one . . .

Update on My New Book

Hey guys.  Book 2 (or Book 4, depending on how well you know me), is now firmly in the “it writes itself” stage of production.  I find the first 35-40 thousand words are the hardest, but once you have the characters established and the plot set, you can really dive in.  It’s amazing how much the personalities of your characters and the dynamics of the plot start to drive everything.  I think there is even a decent chance I will finish by my deadline . . .
